Hi, currently uploading a prerelease of netPanzer 0.8.3, it has a suffix of "RC2".

That means it is a release candidate.
That means that it is meant to be tested.
The protocol is different, it means it won't be compatible with previous versions, it is meant to be that way.
It also means that someone must put a couple of servers with this version.

Now, if everything is good, come here (this post) and tell us your specs, we would like to know the smallest machine (in resources like CPU and MEMORY, not the actual physical size of the device) that netPanzer can run.

Then, if something is bad, come here (you guess which post, isn't it?) and say it. If you don't say it, we will never now and the final netPanzer 0.8.3 will have the thing that went wrong with you.

No new features will be added on this version, "new" means something that is not already in the prerelease.

Bugs will be fixed only if they render netPanzer unplayable.

If there is nothing wrong with it, it will be released as final version. On the other hand, if some changes needs to be done, a new release candidate will be done (RCX where X is the value of the previous release candidate incremented by 1 unit on the current measuring system) and we might or might not go back to the beginning of the loop.

I'm interested in the following machine tests:

  • Windows Vista - Works, verified by fu.
  • Windows 7(no idea if it works)
  • Linux 32 bit using provided binary
  • Linux 64 bit using provided binary(binary is 32 bit, will it work?)
  • Mac OS X with PPC cpu
  • Mac OS X with INTEL cpu(it works in mine, but how about others?)
  • Linux 32 bit custom build (use svn 1209)
  • Linux 64 bit custom build (use svn 1209)
  • Other OS (FreeBSD, Haiku, etc..) custom build (you guess which svn version)
  • GCC >= 4.4 build, it seems he likes to complain a lot

btw: key F9 does a screenshoot, it is saved as .bmp in .netpanzer/screenshoots

I forgot THE LINK: http://www.netpanzer.org/download/np/index.php?dir=Binaries/NetPanzer/Development/

Tried in Windows 7 - Everything worked fine Wink

see .zip in attachment for full report

Also included an alternative pics/default/playerColor.bmp which I think it's more elegant.

This one must be fixed in RC2.

I wondered why I could not see objectivelimit value in serverbrowser with last 0.8.3 RC1. All current serverbrowsers failed in displaying that variable.
I checked script with no success until I tried a "raw" query to a 0.8.3 RC1 gameserver (objective) and this is the result:

Code:
\gamestyle\Objective \units_per_player\55\time\150\timelimit\50\fraglimit\500\objectivelimit\3\final\

that unusual space after Objective in gamestyle entry is the "prime suspect"...

But I have to say that, the serverbrowser has problem too, it can't handle the spaces.

OK I've added some lines in sb script. Now everything is trimmed at the beginning. Changes will be commited to abitos' serverbrowser repository.

to c-d: try this: http://www.netpanzer.org/download/np/index.php?dir=Binaries/NetPanzer/&file=npup.zip

uncompress and replace your 0.8.3 exe file with the one in this one.

It works as before and could have the colors problem. If you have the colors problem, quit the game (very important to quit first), go to your .netpanzer/config folder (where the netpanzer.ini is) open the config.cfg and set the

Code:
video.usedirectx = false

start the game again. The color problem may have been fixed for you.

If someone else can test it too, like UNGA (there is a linux binary inside too) the game speed should be fast again.

i tested it few times in different resolutions + windowed and fullscreen etc. it seems that it works fine with "video.usedirectx = false" and the fps was also constantly 50. "video.usedirectx = true" -color problems..

This morning I had the chance to make a test with an old PC: AMD Duron 1,2 GHz 256MB Ram and Win XP SP3

I used same screen resolution 1280x1024 and connected to same server.

with 0.8.3 RC1 = 13 FPS (unplayable)

with 0.8.3 RC2 = 21 FPS (playable)

notice: reducing screen size allows a better fps, also the quality of your connection (to given server) has some (minor) importance.

that's encouraging...

P.S. When using Windows binaries, on connection, I still see the first flag (Albania) before even motd in chat. That does not happen when using Linux.

I made a test similar to my previous with kubuntu 9.10.
This time I used an Ubuntu 9.10 64bit live-CD

After installing sdl-mixer dev package I could compile without problems and then playing was OK.

Though I coudn't run the downloaded binary in no way (my fault or possible in a 64bit environment?)

The binary is 32bit only, I haven't made a 64bit crosscompiler.

Nobody has complained in the last few days, it seems we can start preparing the final version. What do you think?

I think it's time. Even two german senators like Mathias and Triple S - well-known "skeptics" hehe - said they're very happy with 0.8.3 RC2. Thx to your patience, now binary has almost the same requirements of last release so it shouldn't create big problems to players with old PCs.
